Welcome BMHA's new EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR :
LARRY HAYES

At May’s AGM, the new executive was entrusted with finding a part-time Executive Director for the association. We are pleased to announce that Larry Hayes, Honourary Life Member of Burnaby Minor, was been selected for the position.

Larry is your first point of contact for the Associaton. If he can't answer your question, he'll direct you to the right Executive member who can. He can be reached at director@burnabyminor.com .

With more than half of his life involved in the coaching, management and administration of the game, Larry has amassed experience in nearly all aspects of amateur hockey.  His experience includes Junior "A" management stops in Burnaby, Vancouver, Richmond, Chilliwack, New Westminster and Estevan, Saskatchewan as well as being involved with Junior "B" hockey in Burnaby, New Westminster and Coquitlam.  On the minor hockey scene, Larry has devoted more than thirty years of service to the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association as a coach, manager and executive member.  Over the years he has also taken his administrative expertise to the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association, British Columbia Amateur Hockey Association and as a Vice-President of the B.C. (Junior "A") Hockey League.  He was also involved in various capacities with the B.C. "Best Ever" program for eight years, as well as with other elite hockey programs, including the Vancouver Hockey SuperSeries.

Larry's list of highlights include a first place BCHL finish as Manager of the Chilliwack Chiefs during the 1990/91 season, participation in the Bantam "AAA" and Midget "AAA" Provincials with the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association in 91/92 and 88/89 respectively, a Lower Mainland Championship with the Junior "B" Burnaby Bluehawks in 86/87, a Lower Mainland and Provincial Junior "B" Championship with the Coquitlam Warriors in 92/93, a Lower Mainland, Provincial and Pacific Region Championship with Joe Sakic and Burnaby Minor's Midget "AAA" Hawks in 85/86, culminating in a trip to the Air Canada Cup, a Lower Mainland, Provincial and Western Canada Championship with the Burnaby M.H.A. Bantam "AAA" team in 1983/84 and a variety of other memorable moments.

He has travelled extensively throughout the Province, Canada and the United States, and a number of hockey trips to Europe and Asia, including as being the B.C. delegate on a hockey administrator's tour of Finland and the (then) Soviet Union in 1984 and to Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic to the Czech Challenge Cup in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 2004.  In August 2008, Larry assisted with the Nikkei Hockey Team ’08 on their exhibition hockey tour to Japan.

Throughout the 1990’s, Larry was a vocal proponent for the development of a new arena facility for the City of Burnaby, and for a number of years he dedicated himself to the establishment of a Junior “A” hockey franchise for the new Bill Copeland Sports Centre, opened in the Fall of 1997.  As the Co-ordinator of the Burnaby Junior “A” Hockey Group, Larry brought together a group of investors to make the Burnaby Bulldogs Junior “A” Hockey Club a reality for the 1998/99 season.  He assisted in the set-up and administration of this venture during the inaugural year.

For his many years of dedication to the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association, the prestigious award of "Honourary Life Member" was bestowed on Larry in May 1997.  For his ongoing involvement in the development of amateur sports in the City of Burnaby, he was inducted into the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.  In May 2009, Larry was awarded the “Gold Puck Award” by the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association for his contribution to amateur hockey in the Lower Mainland.

Larry also finds time for community committee work with Burnaby KidSport, the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame and Sport Burnaby and as a Board member of the Simon Fraser University Alumni Association.  He is also in his third term as a Trustee on the Burnaby Board of Education, having been elected in 2002, 2005 and 2008.
